Also, a great mod that protects drivers behind you from getting chipped windshields. SHORT SHIFTER KITS

There are many examples that are just a hair above $250, but because the BRZ, FR-S, and the 86 are naturally aspirated platforms, there are mods that enthusiasts find fulfillment in. A short shifter kit is one of the mods that makes this particular platform much more enjoyable to drive. These cars have a close-ratio manual transmission, and reducing the shifter throws especially during competitive driving events will help reduce lap times in a car not known for speed. Yet for daily driver use, it also makes zipping around town a better overall driving experience.

 

FRONT LIPS

This is a great way to add race-inspired looks as it visually brings the front bumper closer to the ground. This is one of the best aesthetic upgrades for enthusiasts who like to socialize at car meets, yet they serve an aerodynamic purpose which is to increase downforce and stability at higher speeds. We have examples under $200, yet there are examples beyond $500. All are great examples that will improve the looks and the speed refinement for your BRZ, FR-S, or 86.

 

TRUNK SPOILERS

This is a winner right here. Especially for the A90 Supra, or the 2022+ BRZ/86 where the contours of the rear trunk are duckbill like. We have carbon fiber examples that add a nice touch to the exterior as carbon fiber does, and they are simple to install by just making sure the contact surface is nice and clean, and they will install using automotive-grade double-sided adhesive.

 

SWAY BARS

Now some of the sets will be a hair over $500, but on an individual basis many will be within the budget. Aside from coilovers, sway bars are the best suspension upgrade as they reduce the body roll in fast corners. This allows the suspension and steering response much faster, easier to navigate, and the driver confidence is greatly increased as the vehicle is much better to control. Many with a front engine, rear-wheel-drive layout like the A90 or BRZ will opt to get a bigger sway bar to help adjust understeering or oversteering issues depending on your driving preferences.

 

COLD AIR INTAKE SYSTEMS

Now with the BRZ/FR-S/86 there are only a few performance mods that you can do if you don’t plan on going forced induction which 90% of you won’t be doing. That is a cold air intake, and a cat-back exhaust. A cold air intake system replaces the restrictive OEM intake box and paper filter and allows the engine to inhale a larger volume of unrestricted air to improve the throttle response. This adds more horsepower and torque. And a great mod for a turbocharged vehicle such as the A90 Supra as the turbo works harder to suck in sir during boost.

 

SHORT RAM INTAKE SYSTEMS

Same methodology as a cold air intake system, but with shorter pipe routing for a quicker response. Cold air intakes have longer intake tubes to cool the air closer to ambient temps, while short ram intakes are easier to install, and the performance gains are virtually the same. It just boils down to personal preference.

 

AXLE-BACK EXHAUST SYTEMS

The best exhaust mod you can do to your BRZ, FR-S, or 86 if you want to keep things relatively stock and just want the sound. Axle-back exhaust systems are direct replacements for your OEM muffler, and there is muffler delete examples and other examples with bulti-in smaller mufflers to both save weight while producing that louder flat-four rumble. If you know how to wrench, and more importantly know how to secure your vehicle on jack stands, you can have an axle-back system installed within an hour.

 

AIR OIL SEPARATORS

Because your BRZ, FR-S, and 86 all share the same engine, that engine is a flat-four Subi engine known for an inherently weak positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV). What happens is that oil and vapors like to travel through your intake system and this dirty unfiltered mist can coat the tops of your pistons which leads to detonation of your pistons because the contamination lowers your gasoline octane rating. The contamination also causes carbon buildup on your intake valves. All of which leads to misfiring and a slow engine death. Air Oil Separators separate oil from the air, so that the oil stays in the oil pan or in the catch can, while only air makes it through the intake system.

Ride height adjustment can be made by safely securing your vehicle on jacks, once you remove a wheel you can loosen the lower spring perch and twist the strut body into the lower mount to reduce the height.
