A90 Supra Exhaust Options

As discussed in several blogs, one of the most popular ‘first’ upgrades on any performance vehicle is a modified exhaust system. And for this article, we’d like to highlight the controversial A90 Toyota Supra. Aka the BMW. And yes, we get it, we know about BMW’s reliability pains, and Supra purists much like the author will always shake their hands in rage whenever an A90 drives by making flatulent noises between shifts.
Yet the B58 has proven to be quite the platform for BMW. Late and legendary social media influencer 1stockf30 who we recently tragically lost, was the first to put a stock motor B58 BMW into the 8-second ¼-mile range which is insanely fast when compared to super high-horsepower titans such as the MKIV Supra, the Corvette C6 ZR-1, the Camaro ZL-1, R35 GT-R, and the rest of the fastest modified street cars. The B58 as headache-inducing it is to look at in the engine bay, loves to make some power especially when combined with the lightning-quick shifts in the ZF 8HP transmission.
Not only is the engine fast but the B58 has proven to at least have a large performance range in terms of being able to produce high amounts of horsepower under boost. The question for many owners is that do they like their B58 in a variety of BMW models for more luxury, or do they like their B58 in a more sleek-looking Toyota?
Currently, the MKV Supra is hard to beat for the value in the used car market. Especially if you want something turbocharged and has a large aftermarket support. You also have higher milage early R35 GTR models that are in the upper 40 thousand to lower to mid-50-thousand-dollar range. But if you want something newer and with arguably better ergonomics in terms of interior and exterior build quality, the MK5 Supra is hard to beat. Ther main complaint about the MK5 Supra is the interior noise with the windows down. But the overall fit and finish, the way it handles has BMW Motorsport DNA in it which in a positive note, is what makes BMWs so pleasant to drive. Mechanical and electrical reliability issues aside, when a BMW works as it should, they are really nice cars to drive with the perfect marriage in power and handling. After all, BMW brought us some of the best drivers’ cars such as the E30, E36, and E46 M3 models. As much flak as the A90 Supra has received, if the B58 proves to be a robust engine for long-term use, it also has the potential to be known as one of the legends.
Now, if you’re a new A90 owner, or if you’re an original owner and are ready to add a little upgrade here and there, a good cat-back exhaust system is a great place to start. You want a modified exhaust for the same reason why everyone loves them so much. They help your car make those race car noises, while adding more horsepower. This is all possible because modified exhaust systems at least units that are made with quality, are made using larger piping diameter, with smooth bends. This allows the exhaust gases to escape faster without the turbulence associated with an OEM exhaust. If your exhaust gases can escape faster with less restrictions, this means that the engine can exhale better which will increase the horsepower as well as increase the boost by a few PSI. This method is why cold air intakes are also equally as popular as modified exhausts because they allow your engine to breathe higher volumes of air through a large cone filter without the restrictions of a paper filter inside a box.
Furthermore, most modified cat-back exhaust systems will not require a tune. This means if you are mechanically inclined enough and have a jack, with jack stands and the required tools, a modified cat-back exhaust system makes for an excellent weekend project.
